[some of the gang at
Yotta]
(Pic from Michelle Wong)

I'm currently doing an Industrial Placement Year from uni at Yotta, a digital mapping company based in Leamington Spa. I began as a lowly GIS data processor and have now moved to being the CVI/DVI Processing Co-ordinator, and wrote a few manuals along the way. My current challenge is to recruit and train a team and document the procedures.

Next Autumn I'll be heading back to uni for my final year of my BSc Geography degree at Coventry Uni (chosen due to proximity to my house). My main academic interests are GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and hydro(geo)logy.

In a previous life, I worked as an Analytical Chemist at Severn Trent Laboratories in Coventry, where I work for the Quality department making Analytical Quality Check standards for the laboratories. Before I moved to Quality I worked in the sludge lab, analysing sludge from sewage works, which could be a bit smelly at first, but then it kills your sense of smell! I hadn't envisaged working in chemistry as it was my least favourite of the sciences at school, but I discovered that the processes at sewage works are actually quite interesting! But I also discovered that the career progression at STL is minimal, which along with the rubbish pay motivated me to go back to uni and finally get my degree!

Other stuff about me:

  • After I left Durham Uni (where I began an MSci in Physics), I lurked around Newcastle-upon-Tyne for a year before moving down to Tamworth, Staffordshire where my boyfriend (now fiance) Matthew lived. We then moved to the picturesque (ahem) Coventry to be nearer to work.

  • I like going camping and visiting new places (see my Photo Album for some pics). Travelling is something I can't afford to do much anymore but would love to do more of. Rencent conquests include Iceland with uni, backpacking right across Australia, teaching English in Poland, and trekking and field work in Morocco with British Schools Exploration Society. More recently, I have been to rather more tame locations such as Cornwall & Cheddar Gorge and the Lake District (where we even swam in Lake Bassenthwaite!).

  • I like snowboarding at the Tamworth Snowdome, an indoor skislope with real snow, but I'm too skint to try it out on real snow. I've just joined a gym too because I'm not as active as I used to be- lets see how long my good intentions last! I used to live for sailing when I lived at home, but there's nowhere nearby here and I can't afford it anyway! I miss zooming about in a Laser.
